The Ministry of Health has called upon the management of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital to provide an explanation regarding the newly imposed fee on kidney patients attending dialysis sessions at the Renal Unit of the facility.

The hospital has faced significant criticism following reports of a revision in its dialysis charges. The Head of Public Relations at the Ministry of Health, Isaac Ofie, has stated that the hospital’s management will be summoned by the ministry to clarify why the new fee was introduced without obtaining approval from either the Ministry or Parliament.

Ofie emphasized, “Before increasing fees, there is a need for a proper procedure and caution to be exercised, including presenting the proposed price to Parliament for approval before implementing the fees.” He added, “But as of now, this proposal has not reached us, and even if it had, it should have been presented to the Ministry and subsequently to Parliament for approval before it could be charged.”

In response to the situation, Dr. Opoku Ware Ampomah, the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, said that only six individuals have been affected by the new charges, and steps are being taken to rectify the situation. He stated, “Fortunately, this was identified promptly, and upon investigation, it was found that only six individuals had made payments at this rate. These individuals are patients receiving chronic dialysis, and the charges will be refunded. We have already taken internal measures to rectify the issue and are also exploring ways to prevent such occurrences in the future.”
