Odododiodio clash: Nii Lante Vanderpuye confirms 2 arrested are NDC; says police being selective

The Member of Parliament for the Odododiodido constituency has confirmed that the two persons who have been arrested following Sunday’s violence at Jamestown are supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Nii Lante Vanderpuye in an interview with Joy Prime on Wednesday questioned the police on why only members of his party were arrested when the incident occurred between supporters of both the opposition NDC and governing New Patriotic Party (NPP)

According to him, it was members of the NPP that instigated the fight, hence, arresting only supporters of the NDC as perpetrators of the act is unfair.

“As I speak to you, those who started the violence are walking free and two of our [NDC] boys have been arrested and have been kept in police cells since yesterday,” he said.

The Ghana Police Service on Tuesday revealed that two persons have been arrested in connection with the violence that occurred at Jamestown in the Odododiodio constituency on Sunday.

According to police, preliminary investigations confirmed they initiated the disturbance.

However, the Odododiodio legislator insists that the two supporters of the NDC who have been arrested are innocent.

Mr Vanderpuye also complained about the severity of injuries that members of his party sustained for ‘merely embarking’ on a peaceful walk.

He rejected all accusations of complicity in the happenings of this past Sunday morning levelled against him by his political opponent in the constituency, the NPP’s Nii Lante Bannerman.

“You have organised your walk on Saturday, we totally allowed you, we didn’t interrupt. We allowed you to do everything you wanted to do. But when we went to do ours on Sunday, all of a sudden you organised thugs to pelt my people with bottles and even one of your boys comes out with a gun and shoot into the crowd,” he stated.

A peace walk by supporters of the NPP and NDC turned violent in Jamestown in the Odododiodio constituency on Sunday morning.

In a video sighted by Myjoyonline.com supporters of the two leading parties were hurling bottles at each other amidst the firing of gunshots.

At least 20 persons were injured in the clash whilst a building believed to be the NPP’s office was vandalized.
